Made a apointment today for a service that will be done next week at my Ford dealer. Transmission hot flush $179.95 Transmission external filter replacement $69.95 and yes I had them double check the price on the canister filter. They must have dropped the price down on them like they did the trans fluid tempature sensors. 4+ years ago those sensors were selling for around $75 now their less then $20.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to backflush a transmission unless the engine is running backwards. The pump will act like a giant check valve preventing and backwards flow.
Flushing a transmission is a good way to change all of the fluid, including what's in the torque converter. Most of the machines connect into a cooler line and use the transmission's pump to do the work. The fluid flows in the normal path, but the machine removes the old fluid and replaces it with the same amount of new fluid. You can do it with the filters in place with no chance of damage.
The TorqShift transmission has a thermostat in it. This means the transmission MUST be over 170°F during the entire procedure or the old and new fluids will mix instead of getting the old fluid out. The way to do this is with a heated flush machine. Not many places have one of those.
The said thing is that some dealers tell you they hot flush when in fact they dont, i cought mine red handed and made a realy big deal about bout it, there exchange machine had no heating device what so ever......realy make's you think how offen this goes on with un noisey coustomers! and they attemped to charge me around 368.00 for the service!
never back flush you transmission. the filters have a cellulose component in them. this paper material was not ment to be back flushed. it can deteriorate and clog up the transmission.
I took my other truck in for a trans service to a shop that has 35 years of service here in long beach and asked for flush and the owner talked me out of it saying " I'll do it if you want but these trans shops are just making $ by selling that service, just keep your scheduled changes and dont stir the pot" I put 180,000 miles on that trans and changed filters every 30-40k never had an issue it was a dodge 1500 1/2 ton ,when new I was told it was a iffy trans so I tried to do the right thing w/maint. I plan to just change filters w/ the 6.4 also ........2 cents worth
