Transmission flush gouging...

Im trying to find out an average cost those of you who have had your tranny's back-flushed have had to pay.I called a local dealer here and was quoted a price of 817.00 for the procedure. And thats just for the flush, not for the filter changes. In have already bought the filters online and all ill have to pay is labor for the install after the flush, but 817.00 for a back-flush sounds like robbery. How much have some of you had to pay?

Mine was in the area of $450.00. The service writer felt bad and only charged me 125 for the filter not the 178 it's listed for. But he did say he used the expensive tranny fluid Ford recemonded. I also have an 08 job one truck.

I was quoted 250 bucks or so from a local trans shop the other day. He said a little over 300 if you have the external filter as well.

This thread made me call my shop and they came in at 168.00 parts and labor for a trans flush using the recommended fluids. I'm at 80k and going to go ahead and get it done tomorrow.

I bet so too Mercon SP is damn expensive in itself before any morakup. We had our '05 done we twice w/ the external filter and it was around $400 from Ford. I am not a fan of Ford's pricing on such things but I wanted the history of it being done every 30K for the warranty.

Need to get the '08 done but haven't yet, even asked when the truck was in once but they didn't do it.

never back flush you transmission. the filters have a cellulose component in them. this paper material was not ment to be back flushed. it can deteriorate and clog up the transmission.

Wow, scott...over $800 is simple robbery!

I've heard between $2-300 from most people here on FTE. Remember that Mercon LV is now specced for these trannies as well as SP. This is the same fluid used in most new Ford cars and trucks, so eventually it will get cheaper.

Don't let anyone but a dealer do the flush though, I've seen horror stories of some shops using Mercon V and doing permanent damage to the shift solenoids!

I had mine done at my local Ford dealer in March. It cost me around $220. I also had the coolant flush and oil change in the same trip. Total bill was $450. The dealer I use has decent prices as far as I am concerned.

Back flushing is how these trannies are done. The filters are removed before the flushing is performed.

As far as the filters, I bought mine from Amazon. They are genuine Ford filters. I paid 81.16 for the remote filter here Amazon.com: Motorcraft FT176 Transmission Filter: Automotive and 23.83 for the pan filter here. Amazon.com: Motorcraft FT144 Automatic Transmission Filter Kit: Automotive

I had my pan dropped and filter changed roughly 3 weeks ago and it cost me $140 at a local shop. That was no flush so the fluid in the TC was not changed but they said the fluid was still good and it was not a worry. I'd lose my mind if they said it was going to be anywhere near $800. The guy at the tranny shop (who has been working on trannies for 30+ years) highly recommended that I never have the tranny flushed anywhere. He said the flushing machines can cause major damage to these new transmissions and it's never a good idea. This guy could rebuild a tranny with his eyes closed so I'll take that advice to the bank.

Thanks for the advice Brandon. What about the fluid? Now that there is the different fluid for the tranny does that create a problem? Or are they compatible?

It is IMPOSSIBLE to backflush a transmission unless the engine is running backwards. The pump will act like a giant check valve preventing and backwards flow.

Flushing a transmission is a good way to change all of the fluid, including what's in the torque converter. Most of the machines connect into a cooler line and use the transmission's pump to do the work. The fluid flows in the normal path, but the machine removes the old fluid and replaces it with the same amount of new fluid. You can do it with the filters in place with no chance of damage.

The TorqShift transmission has a thermostat in it. This means the transmission MUST be over 170°F during the entire procedure or the old and new fluids will mix instead of getting the old fluid out. The way to do this is with a heated flush machine. Not many places have one of those.

I'm 98% sure they are compatible and if not you can buy a small bottle of additive that will make the old fluid as good as the new.
