I bought a 1978 F-100 and I noticed that the steering is really touchy. In the wind or any pot holes, the truck would wander. The tires are 235R78-15 and I haven't had the chance to check the steering linkage and kingpins yet. Any common trouble area's common on this truck? I only paid 500.00 for the truck and it's in good shape considering the age.

You got the right idea, you just need to crawl underneath the front-end while a buddy works the steering wheel back and forth, as you look for excess slop in all the usual places i.e. tie-rod ends, drag link, rag joint, ball joints or king pins, etc.
I recently picked up a '79 that had bad wandering steering. I did like Montana highboy said and had someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while I looked under the front of the truck. Expecting to see a wore out ball joint or something common, I was surprised to see the steering box moving around. Two mounting bolts were finger tight and the third was not much better.

I can top that. Dad's truck was a nightmare to keep going in a straight line. Not only were 2 of the gearbox bolts loose and the 3rd not much better, but the tie rod on the bottom of the pitman arm wasn't even tight.
Of course, the cracks in the frame around the steering gear didn't help any...... nor did the missing radius arm bushing.
