I own a 1977 F150 4x4 with a 351M. Yesterday, when I was driving home, the motor suddenly lost power and died. The only way I could restart it was to pump the pedal while cranking it, but even after restarting, the motor ran rough and would die unless I kept my foot on the gas. when the motor shut off, it sounded as though gas was pouring into the carb. I disconnected the pcv valve when I was messing around and it ran a little better and I was able to limp it home. any suggestions about what my problem might be?
Sounds like some varnish got trapped in the needle seat, keeping the needle open. When this happens, it's usually time for a carburetor rebuild. Have you verified that fuel is actually pouring into the carburetor? Often times fuel will pour out from the bowl vents in this situation as well.
when the motor initially died, the fuel in the inline filter was bubbling up, and it sounded as though the fuel was pouring into the carb and there was a bit of fuel coming out of the vents. but the only way I can start it is while pumping the gas, which seems odd if it is getting too much fuel.
