I have a "93 f250 IDI 4x4 auto...
Original starter died last year while on the road..
Replaced it with autozone unit w/Lifetime warranty...
Died again this week, I went to pull it and the entire solenoid housing rotated while I was loosening the nut and looks to be coming apart...
I can swap it under warranty but if this is the quality level of the product I don't want to waste my time...
I have seen the Mitsu, Bosch, Denso, and the eBay brands randomly commented on and according to comment they are all wonderfull and they all suck sooo....
Is there a consensus as to which one I should buy so that a starter replacement does not become an annual affair.
I bought a bosch starter, new not reman. Working awesome for nearly two years now and spins the same as it did the day i bought it. Lifetime warranty through lordco auto parts here in bc canada, you might get the same from similar autoparts stores.
i bought a new napa starter, i cant remember who made it but its been on there for over a year and no problems yet, it also carries a lifetime warrenty. go for a new starter though, not a reman
Seems you got a bad one. I got mine at the zone about three yrs ago now and it still spins the beast like new. Although I uasually don't go for the big chain store stuff I bought it due to the price and warranty. But it was a new unit and not reman. Way i look at it it comes out perty easy and at free replacement I will go back as many times as I need to.
I got mine from Oreilly, NEW Motorcraft with a unlimited lifetime warrenty...(it was in the 86, I had a Bosch and after I bought the truck, bout six weeks later it slowly started spinning the engine slower...then longer and slower...then slower....
I am running the Autozone starter no problems so far since you have got the warranty you should collect it. when you pick up the new one make sure all the nuts bolts and screws are tight then make them put it on their tester and if it is less than perfect make them get another. every maker has a bad one sooner or later. If you just aren't satisfied buy what ever other one you like and put this one on the shelf for a spare.
Thanks all...
I was surprised ho bad the condition was on the starter... It was badly corroded all over and had even seized itself to the engine I had to use a 2x4 and a mallet to break it loose.
I took it back and the guy did not believe it was only a year old...he tested it (five times) and it was total failure. He checked serial # and was in dis-belief. the solenoid was almost rusted thru and was very loose. Anyway I'm gonna try the new on and see how it goes.
Is there any reason you guys can think of that would cause this level of corrosion it looked like the oldest part on the truck the only thing that had more rust was the exhaust manifold. I don't drive it near water, etc. and it only had about 6,000 miles on it.
Where do you live? If you're anywhere in the northeast, and didn't clean any of the salt off, that could happen in a year. But that seams pretty atypical that it would rust to hell in a year!
