--loosening of the exhaust and intakes, mostly on mid '80s engines. This is always an problem on in-lines with loooong manifolds, but those years are the worst.

--rear main leaks. Don't know why, just a lot of them leak.

--pre-efi computer controlled carb can be a pita, and the plastic vacuum lines used on this and every other Ford (and who knows how many other vehicles) are past their service life now, and break like strands of uncooked pasta.

--really high mile units start to shed the nylon on the cam gear, which can plug up the oil pickup if you are unlucky.

You won't find many problems with the rest of it if it's taken care of at all.

I had a '94 4x4 with the 4.9 and here's the problems I had.

1. Distributor gear roll pin backed out and dropped the gear destroying the camshaft. Gave me reason to swap in comp cams bump stick.

2. Air injection manifold cracked at each cylinder, replaced manifold just to find the air pump didn't work so I deleted the whole system.

3. Could never get the timing to set correctly, even with the "plug" pulled it would always try to advance.

4. Endless EGR position sensor codes probably the fault of the new parts being outo f ohm range from the factory.

5. Rocker arms wearing through.

6. Intake leaks (many).

This was all after about 340k miles on the clock so I wasn't angry about it. Truck still runs and last I head it was over 400k.

Trying to reach cylinder No. 6 when you're working on it. It's like a GM distributor.

Obviously, most of us are big fans of the 240/300 six. I have 3 trucks with the 300. They really are pretty simple and tough engines. Most problems are from misuse or lax maintenance. Plus parts just wear out after a while.

Worst problem? There isn't an aftermarket aluminum head that will add a bolt-on 75+ hp like a SBF. Those V8 guys have no idea how easy they've got it.
