So I was driving My 1997 F-350 w/ a 351 on the interstate when I started to loose power so i pulled over to the side, turned the truck off. Opened the hood and the spark plug wire seemed to of been resting on the manifold and melted in half. There was a little fire burning but it was easy enough to blow out. I get towed home and I replaced the wire and now I have a knock in the engine. Any ideas?
Perhaps pull the plug that was connected to that wire. Inspect for possible signs of damage to the tip/electrode.
Only other thoughts is that there was plenty of voltage going to ground when the wire melted in half. I'm unsure of what else could be underlying as a problem now. Hopefully other members will chime in with advice.
Well i'll replace the distributor and spark plug. and i'll check the oil pressure and RPM's when i get home. i had to get out of town for a few days but please keep the advice coming. everything is appreciated
have you ever heard a rod knocking? or a bad crank bearing knocking? how about a collapsed lifter "tap"? terminology is key when describing an irregular sound. . .they all have their own distinct sounds that, when heard by a familiar ear, cannot be mistaken for one or the other. if you have a "tap" vs a knock coming from the top of your motor, chances are you have a collapsed lifter.
well now that i think of this it sounds more like a "tap".
Truck starts right away. i have no RPM gauge so I cant really see what its doing but otherwise it sounds like the RPM's are not fluctuating at idle and there really doesnt seem to be a loss of power when i give it gas.
