Problem with lurching - diesel

Our truck will all of a sudden blow black smoke out of the tailpipe and lurch, like it's not getting gas. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? It is a F250 Diesel with the 6.0 liter engine.

It would help to know year model, mileage/date of last oil change and fuel filter change, and mileage on truck. Some specifics as it were. Also, if you can get it code scanned it would help tremendously

It is a 2003 F250 with about 100,000 miles. I changed all the filters about 10 months ago.

Find an autoparts store that will loan you a code reader.

Pull the EGR valve and clean it if it is dirty. If it is real dirty, clean the EBP tube and MAP sensor hose.

What weight oil are you using (and what brand filters do you use)?
