Problem with lurching - diesel

Our truck will all of a sudden blow black smoke out of the tailpipe and lurch, like it's not getting gas. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? It is a F250 Diesel with the 6.0 liter engine.

Just kidding, welcome and those guys down there know what they're talking about. They will get you tracking in the right direction, it could be any number of things. Do you have a code reader or the ability to get them read? You will need to provide more info, could just be an EGR valve.
