You mean the little cap you twist off to add oil?

Sometimes the gasket on those gets wore out and it'll let oil leak out. You could either buy another cap or find one in good shape at the junkyard...

Do you have a PCV system and is it hooked up and working?

There is no "crankcase breather" per se on these engines; there is an air inlet on one end and a PCV valve on the other end of the valve cover.

The PCV valve allows blowby gases to get sucked back into the combustion chamber, air is let in to replace the removed volume.

He has a crankcase breather element, and it could be plugged up with oil, or the PCV valve is bad. Or he has excessive blow by due to a worn engine.

I'd replace the crankcase breather, and the PCV valve, make sure everything is working, then go from there if he still has issues.

It's not listed correctly in the Ford parts books for the year range of his truck, but if it's the circular Crankcase breather element directly behind the oil cap, with a hose nipple coming out of it at a 90 degree angle leading to the air cleaner,... The following Crankcase breather should replace your old one.

Crankcase Breather: F1BZ-6A768-A: replaced E6TZ-6A768-A: Motorcraft: FA-1118

PCV Valve: Two to choose from...
1: F-150 4x4: E1DZ-6A666-A : Motorcraft: EV-118
2: F-150 4x2: E0TZ-6A666-A : Motorcraft: EV-111

Check this thread here for more information on the Crankcase breather problem and a picture of the FA-1118 filter....

Okay I have taken to the shop and it is still blowing out oil behind the oil cap.

Did you replace the Breather filter?

Do that at the same time you change the PCV valve.

Change the oil as well if it hasn't been done in a while.

One problem I have run into on the carbureted 300s is the actual pipe that goes into the intake will plug up with sludge rendering the PCV valve inoperable. I agree with 81-F-150-Explorer on change the breather filter, it gets overlooked frequently.

Wanna bet? What year is your parts catalog?

1985 from 7/30 1984, 1986/89: Crankcase Breather: F1BZ-6A768-A (replaced E6TZ-6A768-A) Motorcraft: FA-1118
1980/84, 1985 before 7/30/1984:

E53Z-6B897-A (replaced E43Z-6B897-A, E2DZ-6B897-A, E1DZ-6B897-A and etc) .. Crankcase Ventilation Filter Assy-Includes Cap, Filter & Hoses (Motorcraft EC-712).

Source: 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog-Final Printing March 1994 / Available on a CD (Chris is using this puppy) from hipoparts.com. My 3/94 version is on microfiche.

How old is your parts catalog? Prolly from the 80's. There were four '80/89 parts catalog changes within a 12 month period, beginning: 9/1979, ending 3/1994.

Yeah it's two paper bound books from the 80's, one is text and the other is illustrations. it covers up to 1986. Both are bound in a binder and missing their covers. The dealer was cleaning out it's library back in 1995, and was going to throw them away along with some service books and diagrams so I grabbed them.

It lists the 1985 Breather filter assymbly as: D1AZ-9D695-A / Motorcraft FA-88

It does list two different filler caps though!

The one you mention, E53Z-6B897-A with the hose and fittings... and...

Oil Filler Cap: E5TZ-6766-D, Cross refference that number online and it refferences it's been replaced by: F3AZ-6766-B / Motorcraft: EC-743

hmmm...

This fits into the air cleaner, but there is no need to buy the whole tamale.

D1AZ-9D697-A .. Crankcase Breather Filter Element (foam filter only) Motorcraft FA-105

1985 before 8/30/1984: E5FZ-6766-A (Motorcraft EC-711).

1985 from 8/30/1984 & 1986: E5TZ-6766-D

1987/88: E7DZ-6766A

1989: E9DZ-6766-A

F3AZ-6766-B (replaced: F3AZ-6766-A, FOAZ-6766-A, E9DZ-6766-A, E7DZ-6766-A, E6DZ-6766-A, E5TZ-6766-D).

Step up and buy the 1980/89 CD, won't set you back too much dinero. Keep the ancient 1980/86 version around for sheets and giggles.
