Check engine light.. how to read codes?

my boss' 98 ford explorer is throwing and engine light.. i want to know if there is any way to read the code to figure out how to fix it.. it's an eddie bauer editon, 5.0 V8 auto. i think full time 4wd..

anyway, i know on a honda, the computer reads a series of blinks.. but i don't know about fords. i haven't had a problem yet with my 93 ranger..

For older OBD-I computers you can use flashes. Unfortunately the newer vehicles use OBD-II and need to plug in a code reader.

if there is an autozone where you live take you truck to them, they will pull your codes for free. I have to do the same for my truck im just too lazy to stop by
