04 Mountaineer Overheating

Just put a new (used 4.0 sohc) motor in my moms 04 mountaineed because she ran it super hot and cracked both heads and more. This was a complete engine the only thing not changed was fan. The new motor is still trying to run hot. I back flushed radiator and temporarily removed thermostat and still trying to run hot. I stuck a 3/4 inch rubber hose in fan and can't stop it just to see if it was bad. While flushing it I cranked it and a lot more water was flowing out the removed thermostat housing so that looked good as the water pump goes. SOOOO what next? What else can I try? (not throwing any codes either)

Just bled system (I think) and installed new radiator cap. Still getting hot. I bled system by running with cap off and heat on high out the dash vents. Is that ok?

i park on a slight incline so the radiator is higher than the intake manifold and heater core.. air goes to the top.. another way is to put a flush TEE in the heater hose at the upper most area. helps when backflushing, and i use it as a vent to get the air out. Normally after you run the motor for a few minutes, you can add water to top it off. Running down the road you dont need the fan. Only think keeping it cool is water pump pushing water, and the radiator giving off heat.. I assume the radiator OUTSIDE is also clean, fins not plugged with ????

The radiator is very clean, good fins, etc and truck is actually sitting on a small hill. This thing (twice) will go 3 or 4 miles to get to regular operating temp about 50% on gauge and then to full hot in the next 1/2 mile. There is way too much pressure on the system at normal operating temp also. It is nearing boil over at 50% gauge.

Did you test the thermostat to see if it opens on time and the correct temps?

You also need to be sure to put coolant in it. 50/50 mix of coolant/water is the usual recommendation.

Water pumps designed for V-elts and those for Serpentine belts have different impellers; one pump spins one way, the other spins the other way. A pump spinning the wrong way won't work real well.

Fans are specific to rotational direction, too.

Not trying to say this *is* your problem, but it might be something to look at.

Thanks for the replies. I replaced radiator and it solved my problem. Old one was really clogged. I guess that stresses importance of periodic flushing which is the one thing that I never think about.
