flywheels are motor specific. 300 flywheel is internally balanced and like a 302, 351 are externally balanced. If you put wrong flywheels on you will get a heck of a vibration as the rpms go up. The 300 flywheel should be drilled for a 10 and 11 inch clutch.
If I read your post correctly, the 300 is an internally balanced motor? Same with the 390, so if the bolt pattern on the back of the crank is the same, and the diameter of it is the same it should work.
That would be a warning sign for sure! I got lucky and swapping in the 4spd behind the 390 worked great, no issues. I'm just hoping I'll be able to use some of these new parts down the road when I put a 300 in the old pick-up. The local yards have a few running motors for about a $1 per cubic inch, so I might get my hands on one sometime in the future.
The 390 and 300 flywheels will be different weights and I'm pretty sure they won't work. I've been there and got the wrong flywheel before on an old 300 I had. Put it together fired it up and vibrated like crazy! Had to pull motor again to chain and put correct one on!
I doubt it would fit. The 300 flywheel has a 164 tooth ring gear. The FE flywheel has a 184 tooth ring gear. The FE flywheel is much larger diameter - it would likely not even fit inside the 300 bellhousing, and even if it did, you would not be able to install the starter.
"The 300 flywheel should be drilled for a 10 and 11 inch clutch." I think coolguy is correct on that...no need for anything but the 300 flywheel for either clutch.
Anyone out there make a flywheel that will fit an 11 1/2 clutch for the 300? I seem to remember one member on here saying he had one on the transmission and such he pulled from an 80-something f350. The clutch on the 390 is brand new (40 miles on it so far!) and I don't really feel like shelling out another $200 for another clutch if there's any way this one will work.
