Well, I just bought a 2003 6.0 with 161K on it and it runs great. The previous owner told me that he changed the transmission fluid in the fall of last year and I must say it shifts absolutely perfect and the fluid looks and smell good, however, the external filter cap does not look like it has been touched. I am going to pick one up and look at the external filter tonight or tomorrow night.
Being that it shifts so perfectly, should I worry about changing the fluid and internal filter or just see what the external looks like (for all I know it could be factory), and swap it out.
If the fluid looks good, you should be fine. If the filter is bad, your fluid will degrade quickly and you will notice it when you check. You could go ahead and change the spin on filter, but I would only change that at this point.
That is kind of what I was thinking as well. The fluid looks great, the trucks shifts better than my last one (04), but like I said the canister is suspect, so I figured that might need attention only.
I guess we all have our opinions, but I bought both the external (toilet paper) and internal(screen) filter after the purchase of my truck. I also changed all the fluid. The torque shift fluid is supposed to be changed every 30000 miles. If it were me I would change all the filters and fluid that way you know where you are at and will make sure your good for miles to come!
thats what comes out without droping the pan which only filters birds and big rocks.i change the t-p and 8 qts every 6 months, no problems @200,000 miles
