Ac recharge

I tried recharging my ac in my 89 b2 tonight and at first it wouldn't even turn on nothing no heater but I took it Downthe road to the gas station and it kicked on then but quit after a minute or so.then came back on after filling up and it but wasn't getting real cold.I only live 2min from the gas station did I not let it run long enough or is my compressor going bad? or what I gave no clue where to start

Is your system set up for r134a? And did you fill the system using a kit with a gauge? Those are the first questions that come to mind. I have an '88 and it needed to be upgraded.

Have you rechecked the pressure since you filled it? Also is there any belt noise when the compressor is running? You also said the heater wasn't working, is it that the fan isn't running?

Did you evacuate the system first with a vacuum pump?

If a a/c system has been without any charge for a period of time it is best to evacuate the system prior to putting in any coolant to make sure that there is nothing else besides coolant in your system. Also you have a canister of drying agent that can go bad in the system. If your system is holding the pressure, it might be a good idea to take it to a a/c service to check your system and properly evacuate the system and fill it. Then you can do the maintenance as necessary afterward.
