302-351

I know this question has been beaten like a dead horse but I need some clarification.

If I have a c6 sb tranny. a 302 in their now and going, but the 302 though less then 10,000KMS on it seems to have a few leaks (previous owner built not very well I think)

Now I am wondering if I were to locate a 351w (which vehicle would have that if I call wrecking yards other then these old trucks. Not many in the boneyards by me). What would cause me a difficulty in just bolting it up to tranny. What parts need to be changed, and are they usable from my 302? Is their anything that I may have to locate separatly.

And with just hand tools how long would you figure it would take someone by themself if possible to do the swap in the driveway?

(it's on a 79 F-150)

Thanks,
CK

If I missed some details let me know I want to get the oil leak(s) stopped asap, or just drop in a 351w if its easy enough as the 302 isn't the best truck engine in the world as I've seen stated well enough and I'd have to agree that it is lacking in the torque dept.

If you get the 351w complete, it should be a fairly simple swap.
The flex plate will be different between the two. (Different counterweight. Use one for the 351.) and the Y-pipe if you're running single exhaust (wider/taller block). If it's a 4-wheel drive, watch out for the oil pan sump (rear sump). Also (not sure) the kickdown rod to the tranny might be a different length.

For a 351w HO look for VIN code H on 84-87 trucks and vans. Or you can build one out of other combinations. I have a 75 block with 91 heads and an Edelbrock intake. You could also grab an EFI 351 and put a carbed intake and dizzy on it.

Your current tranny will bolt right up to a 351W.

If you have a complete motor you could do the swap in a weekend easily.

If you do the 351 swap you'll love it, trust me (see my gallery for pics of a 351w in a 79).

Heh another chad from ontario nice.

Where abouts you located?

Your trucks are very nice. What are the rims on your 79?

And how did you battle the rust. Your trucks couldn't possibly of been like that when you got them!

They are very nice (well the 74 and 79 I didn't check the other one I was to busy going WOW that guys has a couple nice trucks!)

And you really think the 351w swap is worth it? What are the stock HP/TQ #'s on the mid 80's HO ones we are talking about, my 79 302 has a rv cam, some headers meant for a mid 80's stang, true duals (no cats just 2 mufflers), and stock 2bbl carb lol.

Oh and those chrome air intakes you have do they work that well? I heard debats on them. My truck has this goofy setup for winter to take air in from by the headers. I want to put one of those chrome ones on but as I said I heard bad things from somewhere (dont remember where though)

Thanks,
CK

I'm from Woodstock area.

351w HO has around 200hp 300ft-lbs stock. If you have Mustang headers already, that makes the exhaust end of the swap easier if you put in a 351.

The rims on the 79 are off of the 74, I just spent a lot of time polishing them. My 79 has original paint and was bought new in Brantford. I don't think it was driven much if ever in winter (wasn't driven much at all, only has 107,000 km on it, and I've put 30 of those on it). I did end up driving it this winter (I know, I know, shoot me now for driving a truck like that in the salt) because I didn't have time to get a winter beater going. The open air cleaner is a PITA in the winter, gets full of dirt, and carb is touchy, throttle is all or nothing when it's below freezing, but it did start every morning, even when it was -25. The air cleaner is good in summer, but it's mostly for looks, when I go drag racing again I think I'll concoct a ram-air setup.

The 74 is looks much better than it is, it had a body job 10-15 years ago, what you can't see is that the passenger side door is on 1 hinge, there's no front cab mounts, and the hood is basicaly outer shell only.

Pretty sure the balance is the same up to '81 on the 302/351's.(28oz) Then as is Ford's infinite wisdom they changed just the 302 to a 50oz.

if memory serves me right you should be able to switch engines over pretty easy as the 302 and the351 are pretty much the same engine just different bore (altho I have been known to be wrong once in a great while) make surew you mark every thing you disconnect and if possible take pictures with a polaroid or digital camera at the start and at different times through the process also , if you dont have one go to your auto parts store and pick up a manual for the year truck you have and also the engine rebuild manual (shouldnt cost more than 15 dollars each)

Actually, it's just the stroke that's longer. Same bore. The 351 is aprox. 1" taller but with creative routing most wiring harnesses will reach.
