While I was doing an oil change today I was checking my suspension, undercarriage, and so on..... I was spinning the front tires and noticed that the axles and front drive shaft were spinning also. My hubs were in auto mode (oem auto hubs that use vacuum) and truck in 2wd. This happen when i spun the driver and passenger wheel by hand. I thought when the hub is in auto mode and truck in 2wd the hub is unlocked and the axle should not spin. So are my hubs always locked?
As I'm typing this I just thought: Does the truck need to be running for the hubs to unlock (use vacuum)?
The hubs should unlock and remain so. A full vacuum pulse locks them, and a lesser vacuum pulse unlocks them. The sometimes get sticky and fail to lock or unlock and need cleaned and lubricated.
It's also possible that it's just a little friction in the hub. Try holding the axle firm behind the wheel and then turning the wheel. If the axle and wheel and locked you will not be able to spin the wheel while holding the axle.
There is a procedure here for cleaning and lubricating the hub if necessary.
Mine use to do that to , I had to lock and unlock them while spinning the tire by hand until they released. Got sick of doing that so I replace them with warn manual hubs and havent had a problem since.
