While I was doing an oil change today I was checking my suspension, undercarriage, and so on..... I was spinning the front tires and noticed that the axles and front drive shaft were spinning also. My hubs were in auto mode (oem auto hubs that use vacuum) and truck in 2wd. This happen when i spun the driver and passenger wheel by hand. I thought when the hub is in auto mode and truck in 2wd the hub is unlocked and the axle should not spin. So are my hubs always locked?
As I'm typing this I just thought: Does the truck need to be running for the hubs to unlock (use vacuum)?
With the tires planted on the ground reach behind the tire and try and spin the stub shafts. If you can spin them then you have no problems in there. With front end up there is no resistance and you will get some spinning
The truck doesn't need to be running for the axles to spin free. There can be a little friction in the hubs that can cause the front axles to spin but it doesn't mean your hubs are bad. Do like Wallz said and spin them by hand to see if they are free.
Check out 'hub maintenance' on Guzzles site. My junk has over 250k miles and mine stick sometimes... I have to manually lock n unlock them when they do. Since I use 4wd rarely, i always verify they unlocked after using them.
