I just replaced the motor in my 88 Bronco II. I got the motor at a junk yard. It has 116000 miles on it and it came out of a 91 ranger. It's a 2.9 and it sounds wonderful. The only problem is it wants to flood out and blow black smoke. It doesnt do it constantly, but it does queit a bit. I took it to auto zone and had them put it on a code reader and it said the EGO indicates system lean. I changed the EGO sensor, the MAP sensor, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, and Fuel pump. I have no idea what else to do. I heard the motor run before I bought it and it seemed to do fine. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks, Gary
Does this engine blow black smoke when it's cold also?
If it does it only after it's run abit, I'd check the ground
wire for the o2 sensor, it's orange in color and bolts
to the back of the passager side head. Or you got a
bad o2 sensor. You can try unplugging the o2 and see
if it clears up. If it does, thats the problem. One other thing
to check is the computer ground and the chassis ground.
The computer ground comes right off the negetive battery
cable. Ground problems can cause alot of headaches and
wasted money on parts that you didn't need.
Good Luck!
Recheck the trouble codes and see if the computer is seeing anything now with the new sensors. Check the fuel pressure and see what's going on there. I've had one car with a problem somewhat similar to this and it turned out to be a bad computer -- couldn't read the O2 sensor properly. Diagnosing that could require a scan tool.
I tried grounding the o2 sensor. Still the same thing. It will miss a little when its cold, but gets worse as it warms up. The check engine light wont come on until about 15-20 min. of driving. I can turn it off and start it back and it will stay off another 15-20 min. I really appreciate the help. Still open for more input.
