that is the incorrect quote. You need to explain to them what you have. Same quote was given to me for 2.3 hours labor. When i explained it right, it went down to 1 hour labor.
I told the guy it was a 1991 7.3 IDI and I wanted to know if they can dynamically set the timing. He talked to the tech and then told me it was $230. It is possible he is thinking it is not an IDI. Maybe I should just go to the dealer with my old IP and injectors and explain how an IDI works. No one seems to comprehend the idea of a non-computer controlled diesel engine.
Can someone post a link(s) to a complete timing tool? I might just buy one. Maybe I can rent it out for a deposit and a couple of bucks to people here since these tools seem impossible to find.
I'm gonna see if I can get some more rattle out of it.
I still have what sounds like a miss. I got a little more rattle but the exhaust still smells rich and even at idle, I notice a very slight amount of smoke at idle. At 900 rpm, my current idle, I feel some unusual shaking when it warms up. It is not there when the truck is cold.
I sent him a message. Is this a good meter? It looks like he has the 7.3 setup.
Not to speak too soon, but if I get a timing meter, I would be willing to rent/loan it out to IDI owners on this site. I would require a deposit (in case the renter destroys it or damages it or never returns it) and maybe a nominal rental fee, plus shipping. It would be a lot cheaper than paying someone to do it for you.
I just put new injectors in. Started fine and ran great. Started a little rough today and lots of smoke. Once it warmed up no smoke Timing or bad injector? No leaks.
Do y'all remember my ricer hombre? Well, he asked me for help because his car wouldn't start. He got a jump from someone else but the car wouldn't hold a charge. His negative battery cable was loose enough to be pulled off the battery with no force at all. I tightened it down for him. His battery read 1.9V on my multimeter without the engine on. I jumped his car with my little car but it cranked for a few seconds then quit. We checked all the fuses and re-set the jumper cables. Meanwhile my car was still charging his battery. It cranked up on the first shot the second time. This hombre has a little, tiny, cute turbo in his car. The thing is about the size of my hand. he wants me to work on his car and A/C in general because both are questionable. I don't mind helping a neighbor but I am no expert in Jap cars. I will tell him if I can't confidently fix something. I am good at wrenching on my own Jap car but I have also done a lot of research on it.
