First off, I would like to thank everyone on the forum for their help in diagnosing my problem. I just changed my IP and things are looking up (mileage that is). Here is what I think was going on with the truck. When I bought the truck, it smoked alot (black/grey), had bad gas fumes, bad mileage and was ticking. I thought I was just being sensitive to diesel as this was my first one. I started to run bio-diesel which cut down the smoke and smell alot. Changed the return lines, injectors, oil, and air and fuel filter and timing. Fumes got better and it ran well performance wise but still had bad mileage. My biggest clue was when I added the pyro. When I stepped on it going up a hill or onto a freeway, the pyro could hit 1200+ no problem if I let it. Since there wasn't black smoke, I thought I wasn't overfueling. Then I read a post that temps often don't exceed 1000F even towing. When I changed the IP (turbo calibrated from DPS), temps do not go over 1000, the quick moving fuel gauge is now more stable and I get a light trail of black smoke when I stomp on it. I didn't have the obvious symptoms of a bad IP as, it ran stable, my valley pan was never puddled with fuel (but it wasn't dry either) and the advance lever worked. I don't know if the previous owner had the pump turned up or the governor adjusted to make it run better or it was just going south. I also found that the tick was due to the exhaust clamp off the downpipe being essentially loose. I tightened it which helped but I am waiting for my ATS upgrade.
