I am very sorry to all the people I offended with my all capitals. I have a digital camera I will take some pictures. I am not sure how to post them. If I am nice to my wife she might help me.
One more thing you might like to know. A power steering box off a late 70's F-250 two wheel drive will work for this conversion. I have posted this information before. Some people think the box turns the wrong way. This is not true . I wish someone would look at both boxes & back me up. I did a conversion for a friend with the two wheel box. I know that is where the box came from becaue I removed it. If I can track him down I will take pictures of his truck too. Te two wheel box is easier to find and a lot cheaper.
The usual determining factor on which way the box turns is whether it is in front or behind the axle. The pitman arm is "usually" positioned so that it swings with the tires.
On a 78 F250 2wd the box sits behind the axle and the pitman arm points forward which is the opposite of a "normal" vehicle. This gives great ackerman steering effects tho
T1...what about the load factor...the 4x4 , f250,f350...ps box takes 4..by..5/8th's diameter bolts to keep it in place.?? nobody ever deals with this issue. I know there are other(cheaper) boxes that will work but Ford didn't just arbitriarly decide to utilize a big ps box for no reason, I would think. just courious...fd
My guess is that Ford used a Factor Of Safety of at least 3 on every crucial part of these over-engineered pickups. This means 3 or more times the failure strength on each part. Compare that to a 70's A-frame front end on other brands. ...Can you tell I'm a Ford fan, ...a believer?
The two wheel box I used was heavier than the four wheel box. The only thing that wasn't it was held by three bolts instead of four. I believe the two wheel box uses three bolts due to the angle it is mounted(for the factory application) not a strength issue. One more thing to think about both of the power boxes were much heavier duty tha the factory box used with the power assist. The mounting hardware that I built is definately heavier than anything that came factory. The channel iron is inside the frame bolted and welded in place.
