Hi
I've been searching this site for somebody who may have had a similar problem. I changed my oem tbc because, although my old tbc was working perfectly it constantly showed tbc fault evrytime at start up which was annoying. so I changed it with a tbc from an identical truck( 06 f350 6.0l crew king ranch). the tbc fault doesn't come on at start anymore and the controller appears to be functioning properly(green light when connected, red when not connected) . the problem is even with the gain set to 10. the trailer brakes hardly work whether with the manual slide or with pedal pressure. when i pull out the breakaway switch the trailer brakes lock as they should . so i am asumeing the problem is the tbc . the question is can the tbc be adjusted or calibrated?
the trailer is the same 15 000 pound 5th wheel. I would pull with my old tbc which worked perfectly aside from the tbc fault. I mentioned before.
thanks in advance Dan
I would start by having someone step on the brakes. Go to the trailer wheels and listen to each drum independantly. Do you hear a buzz at each wheel?
If not then I suspect no power to that wheel. Check for broken wires.
If you check at the trailer plug I beleive each wheel will draw 3 amps if they are working. So 12 amps total.
thank senix for the but the trailer wheels lock when I pull the pin on the braekaway switch and worked perfectly with old tbc ( aside from annoying TBC fault on the message center) but with new TBC brakes hardly apply with gain at 10.whether i activate manually or with pedal pressure. I thought there might be a calibration procedure or adjustment anybody might know of? thanks
It's the controller...mine did the same thing. I just replaced it with a Tekonsha P3 brake controller. http://www.etrailer.com/Brake-Contro...sha/90195.html This thing works way better then my factory one ever did. Comes with a pre-wired wiring harness for your truck..just plug it in. Now I just need to find out how to get the TBC Fault message to go away on the dash when i start the truck. It's alot better knowing I have the piece of mind to know my trailer breaks are going to work when I need them to work.
thanks jeff
I checked out your link do you know if the p3 uses the same system with the brakes hydraulic pressure?
the sad part is, the reason I changed my original tbc is because of the annoying tbc fault message. other than that the unit worked beautifully( best I ever used).
first I'll see if I can find another oem tbc to try.
Dan
How fast are you going when trying it w/ the new controller? Wasn't there a problem w/ the early ones not working unless you were going 15 or 20mph? I'm thinking that was fixed by 2006 though. Maybe something to try but w/ a trailer that big i'd want a long clear stretch in case that wasn't it.
I've got your original problem - thing works great just have the fault message. I hit the button to clear it every time, it's a pain but I'm cheap!
even at 60 mph would sometimes give me 2 bars with my left pedal about to bend and the smell of asbestos coming in the vents.
you want to talk cheap the reason I don't have my old controller any more is because I switched it with a truck that was repoed by the bank and going to auction. I would love to have my fault message back.
Hi everybody
finally got around to testing the controller with the trailer conected . when I push the manual slide . I am getting around 5 volts at the blue wire, both at the connector on the back of controller and at junction on trailer where 7 pin wire comes in. when I pull breakaway switch it is 12+volts. does any body know of a way to calibrate these. or of someone who rebuilds these?
Thanks guys
Dan
