Hi, can we disassemble the 4x4 auto lock on a 2006 F350. I would like to clean and grease it. This one is different that the previous years, I think it is like that since 2005. If we cannot, how do we grease the inside gear?
Which lubricant should we use? I have this thread but there is not enough explanation.
I thought that was a pretty good thread on the new hubs. What other info are you wondering about? As for grease, I used Mobil 1 Synthetic grease in mine. I think it will be good at low and high temps. Seems to be working fine for me. Although it turned out that my real problem was the vacuum valve module, which was an easy swap.
OK, I see now, I saw a spring in there, which I did not see on mine yet because it was not taken apart. There is also some kind of bended washer too? Seems like the needle bearings are free on the ring?
The tin collar seems to be krimped to the rubber?
My 4x4 works fine, I wonder if it is necessary to take it apart like that? Maybe just soak it in varsol, air it, then regrease, but will this be enough to get the grease everywhere needed?
I know I wouldn't take mine apart unless there was a problem. There are some small fragile parts inside that would be easy to bend or damage. The springs that snap to LOCK and UNLOCK position are very small. I think you can work all the grease it needs into the gears and bearing without taking it apart. And don't use too much. You don't want it to get sucked up the vacuum line.
OK, that is what I will do, just clean it, let dry, regrease. But for the needle bearing, I wonder how I get get grease in there, maybe a point greaser?
By the way, the circlip down in the hole to remove the hub, I tried to remove it but that clip is some hard to split, could not get it out, so my vacuum leak will wait, may be I will never repair it before I have something else to fix pass the hub.
