Manifold removal

I'm going to be pulling off my carb sometime this week to rebuild it, and thought I might go ahead and do the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets as well since I'll already have the carb out. How much extra work is involved in removing the manifolds once the carb is off? Will it just be a little extra work, or am I adding a whole lot of extra work to this project?

It really isn't too bad at all. About the biggest challenge you'll have is keeping track of which vacuum lines go where, so mark them with tape, colored zip ties, etc.
There's 13 bolts and then the two that bolt it to the exhaust pipe.

I'd highly recommend having the manifolds planed before you put them back on. The stock is known to commonly warp over time, which makes it difficult/impossible to seal them up even with a new gasket. If you leave the two bolted together, it'll cost much less to have it done.

Also, replace the gasket that is between the EGR spacer and the intake manifold (directly under the carb).

Retorque in the proper sequence and to spec and it'll be good to go.

Ok, great, thanks! Should I be using RTV or something similar on any of these gaskets (intake, exhaust, EGR spacer, EGR valve, carb to manifold)?

Some recommend a little copper spray if you want a really good seal, but I've always put them on dry and never had any issues.

I used high temp sealant on BOTH sides around my exhaust ports. But I run headers. The best int/exh. gasket is supposed to be the Mr. Gasket #260.

Pulling straight 3 manifold

I've never pulled my manifold before, followed my repair manual and got all number bolts, vacuum and electric plugs removed, but not quite sure how to pull the manifold off now. Mallet with wood knocking it away from the engine block seems like it'd work, have the header braced with a come-along so it doesn't fall & knock out anything below.

But any suggestions on next steps would be appreciated so I don't screw it up.

So, if I understand you right, you have the bolts of the intake/exhaust manifold removed, but the manifold won't come off?
For starters, there should be 13 bolts (carb) or 16 bolts (EFI). All intake and exhaust manifold bolts must be removed to remove either of them.
Then, the manifold should just fall off. If it doesn't, it may still be bolted to the exhaust, or some emissions component is still hooked up to it.

Manifold working my nerves

I walked through every step in my Chilton's guide, counted each bolt as it came off, pulled the two bolts from the head of the exhaust pipe. But it's still just sitting there on the side of the engine block, not sure about next steps.

Hrmmm.... If all the bolts are removed, the carb is removed, and the exhaust is unbolted, there shouldn't be anything holding it to the engine. Maybe it's sticking to the gasket and just needs a really good tug, or a little prying. Just double check and be sure you didn't miss a bolt before you do.

The little plastic guide stud is all that can be holding it up. I just removed mine, I gave it a little fist bump.
