Here is a link with a bit of info. It should be one of those three displacements.

Welcome to FTE

The 4th digit of the 11 digit VIN is the engine code. The gasser V8 engine could be any one of the following: 330 2V M/D / 330 2V H/D / 361 / 391 / 401 / 477 / 534.

Because Ford used different VIN engine codes in 1964/66 than they did for later years for certain applications, I cannot list the specific VIN engine codes used with the above engines.

When you do post the VIN engine code, please post the last 6 digits of the VIN. This is the trucks specific serial number, will verify the year/month the truck was assembled.

The VIN is on your registration. On the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch, or on the inside of the glovebox door.

The hidden frame VIN will be found stamped atop the right (passenger) side frame rail either in front of, or partially under the cab.

361 or 391 engines were most common in F 800's. Super Duty's (401 477 534 ) were installed in 850 series and above.

Does it have a monstrous water pump in the middle of the valley on the front of the engine? If it does your screwed. Super duty engines were terrible engines. Anything with a 7/8" fuel line going in and no return is bad news.

361 - 391 good

????????????????????? Clearly the Super Duties are a superior engine to the FT, which was a truckized car engine. The Super Duty was designed from scratch to be a true truck engine. Agian FT stopped at the F 800 class, Super Duties were put in the extra heavy class,850 series and up to 1100 series. It was a product of the 50's, when gas was still the choice for local heavy trucks. We all know the advantages of Diesels as a better choice, but the market was still there for big gas engines in the 50's and 60's.Super Duties came with a 100K warranty in the early 60's, the FT engine never came with this warranty.

IMO, arguing over engines is a moot point, at least in this case. The OP typed his original question over 5 months ago (5/24/2011), hasn't responded since.

I was just stating my opinion.. should have worded it a little different.

The facts that I have seen are .5 mpg with like 190 horse. Slow reving, hard
starting.. Fuel guzzling doesnt even begin to describe the fuel consumption. And they didnt last..

391 - 361 - maybe not the best on fuel but atleast they start reliably and can go more than 50,000 miles without being completely worthless.

Ive had 3 trucks with those engines. 2 534's 1 477..

I dont think they are clearly superior.. I would like to see two trucks loaded to 35,000 lbs 1 with a 534 stock, one with a 391 stock, pull vantage hill (or any equivalent) and we'll see which makes it to the top with the most fuel, and first. Maybe on day 1 out of the factory the 534 may win? But I can guarantee that any one of the 3 I had would have been left in the dust by a 391 powered truck.

Thats why I posted. Really is an opinion, but based on facts.
