I am installing a 351w into my 55 F100. The motor is out of a 1996 Bronco. I am going to use a 5.0 harness from a 93 mustang. I have heard something about TFI but not sure what exactly i will need.
Performance parts:
AFR 185 heads
Trick Flow Lower and upper intake Type R
And 393 stroker....393 crank, stoke rods, mustang 302 piston.
In the 5.0 mustangs the TFI module was always on the side of the distributor so that's where the TFI electrical connector is, but in the trucks it was moved to the fender in 1992. That means the distributor you have isn't setup right for this wiring harness, so you have 3 possible choices.
1. Modify the distributor you have to accept a TFI module. It's not that hard actually(done it myself), first you strip the distributor right down, then make an opening in the distributor body for the internal connection between the TFI and PIP module, and then drill and tap two holes for the TFI mounting screws. With that done reassemble the distributor with the correct PIP module for an onboard TFI and plug it into the motor.
2. Modify the Mustang wiring harness to use a remote TFI module.
3: Get an early 5.8 EFI distributor with an on-board TFI module and put a steel drive gear on it. It needs a steel drive gear because all '94+ 5.8 motors have a billet steel roller cam that will chew up the bronze or cast iron drive gear used on earlier flat tappet motors.
