393 w/ stock 302 pistons

I've read here about building a 393 stroker engine using the stock 351W crank and 302 pistons. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it worth it or do I need to get a kit?

How, pray tell, would it be a stroker with the stock crank?

Read through this thread and the links given:

The 302 pistons are shorter.

Short pistons, that's great. But, I beg of you, how, tell us how, in graphic detail, how you make a stroker with a stock crank?

I read it on one of the threads and was just asking if anyone knew anything about what they are talking about. I didn't say I built one. Just asking for some information, which is what I thought these forums were for.

Stroke is determined by the crankshaft, so if you use a stock 351 crankshaft with 302 pistons, you'll just end up with a 351 with 302 pistons. I have seen somewhere that the 302 pistons can be used with a stroker crankshaft (393?) but I haven't done a lot of research on the subject so I don't know for sure.

Did you go through the thread I linked to above? Many questions answered there.

A 393 is a 302 piston with a 351W rod on a special 3.85 stroke crank.

a cheapo 393 uses the 3.85" stroker crank with stock 351w rods and .030" over 302 pistons (1.6" pi height)
A real 393 uses longer aftermarket rods (6.2") and special pistons with a pin height around 1.45".

If youre thinking about building a 393, first of all it will be a 387 untill you bore it out. Second, youll get more out of the top end if you spend the same amount of time & money on it, as opposed to pulling your engine right apart to get 35 more cubes on an already choked engine.
Rockers, cam, intake, headers yadda yadda.

Don't forget that you will have to clearance it for the stroker just as much as you would if you did a real 408 kit which has much more stroke. So if you buy the right rods 6.2 and pistons anyway the only change is 4 inch stroke and a shorter piston pin height. Cost the same in kit form usually.
