Could you add a separate brake controller for the rear most trailer? although it looks like the type of trailer which would not have brakes

No, I don't think so, but you never know. It doesn't have brakes anyway.

Ya, sometimes you think you have to. I try to keep my distance but with people cutting you off its hard sometimes. I've considered disks for the 5er.
