There is a number code in the sticker at the door, and maybe a tag in the pumpking.

4.10's will also kill your fuel economy, especially at highway/freeway speed.

Thanks Jose, will it read 3.55 or 4.10 or is a code that requires a special de-coder ring?

If you tow heavy (like you do) the 4.10's are definitely the hot ticket. I think the 3.55's are a little too tall, really IMO the ideal gear ratio is the 3.73's from the Super Duty.

Chase, maybe this is a dumb question but could you enlighten me with what its the difference in the practice (I think that I undersand the diff. gears) between them? less lugging?, more heat?, more power? more or less RPM? diff. MPG? or all of them? and why the ideal could b 3.73´s?

I mentioned the 4.10's are better for towing and they are, but I'd rather have my 3.55's than the 4.10's with the power I have now. I wanted 4.10's in stock form, not now. I agree with chase, 3.73's are the ideal gear.

Jose, difference is 4.10's will run about 5-600rpm's more. With 4.10's you'll have less lugging taking off as you get into the power band quicker, but your mileage will suffer with the higher rpm's on the road. With 4.10's you'll "feel" like your truck has more power, since you get into the power band quicker. Generally you'll have more heat with the 3.55's since you'd be running less rpms. 3.73's are a "happy medium" between the two. They will give you +-200 rpm more than the 3.55's. I'd like that, mine is 2040rpms at 75, another couple hundred puts it in the power band better, and would allow for better towing. I just don't want the mileage suffer from 4.10's, 2600rpms wouldn't be soo bad towing, but if empty mileage would drop dramatically

I would love 3.73's personally. I had 4.10's and they took off great around town, but highway speeds were just spinning too high of an RPM when not towing. When I got the 3.55's I hated them at first (truck was still mostly stock). They seemed slow and sluggish. But after putting in the Stage I's they are great.

Basically Jose, the 4.10's keep you in a higher RPM range so less lugging and easier to get going from a stop. Once you are up to highway speeds the higher RPM's give you less MPG, but if you are towing heavy it's easier to pull up hills and passing.

3.55's are a little slower and harder when taking off from a stop and stay at a lower RPM range, so you lose a bit of bottom end but are at lower RPM's at highway speeds, giving you better MPG (unloaded anyways).

I agree with you. 4.10's were good in stock form, but with some Stage I's and tuning the 3.55's are great.
I just remember when I'm towing I can always kick it out of OD and still pull 70mph or better in 3rd gear when pulling hills. That's how my cross-country trip went with the car on a trailer and 2k pounds in the bed. Kept the cruise at 70 the whole time and kicked it out of OD on hills.
