i have been working on the bed for my 55 f100,and i may use alum. boards or planks instead of wood.some call it grating, decking, or planks.like they use on picnic tables or stadium seating...anyone else got this in there truck? also where is a good place to find these, other than the ball parks.I do not think i can get away with that..cheaper to buy them,i bet.
I think what you're talking about is called "expanded metal". You can buy 4x8 sheets of it at steel supply places. You would have to cut your pieces and most likely take them to a powder coat shop after you get them all to fit. You could also paint it, but for a bed floor the powder coat would be really durable.
Cutting is pretty easy with a skill saw and an abrasive metal cutting blade which you can get at the hardware store for around $5. I have made up a couple of big barbecue grills using expanded metal....careful...the edges are sharp!!
It'd be kind of interesting because you'd be able to see all of the running gear under the bed.
that was not what i am thinking.i am looking for the alum. 2x6 planks.like bleachers seats have. not wanting to do alot of cutting and forming. we have had alot of twisters here recently.maybe i should look in the woods.i guess they would be bent up and twisted too.
OK....I gotcha. Those are usually extruded aluminum. You might be able to find something similar if you have a metals supply shop near where you live. That could be a cool look.
Since they're aluminum, people probably steel them and sell it to the scrap metals yard....look there too!! (get a receipt just in case the local high school is missing a few bleacher seats).
look in to a bench where you have seen the aluminum c channel that you liked, look for the manufacturer number and call them and ask them where they get the material and where can you get it.
