Unusual clacking sound?

My 7.3 liter has I think louder than normal clacking sound. Is because warmer temps up in the great white north or maybe a tune up(what does that involve?) Or am I being stupid.I've owned the beauty for almost a year now and just want to do rite. I have had softwear upgraded and I use Howe's lube occasionaly. Also sprayed injector cleaner in intake of turbo (was this a big mistake?) Tks for advice. John

Software upgraded? What does that mean? The 7.3 is a loud diesel engine normally.

That is not really possible. The 2010 engine has quite a few systems that do not exist on the 7.3. Did the dealer reflash your PCM? If so, any tune that 'might' have been uploaded is gone now.

Don't spray anything in the intake again. Only bad things can happen. You can treat your fuel with a product such as Diesel Kleen if you would like but the only thing that should be in your intake is air and whatever crankcase gasses that come from your CCV.

What type of oil are you using and how many miles since it was changed last? How is your oil level? When was your fuel filter changed last? Low fuel flow will make your injectors noisy. Worn out oil is another thing that will do it as well. Sometimes these engines just sound different than other days. Especially if you have your window down when you normally drive with it up.

I would switch to a better brand of oil if I were you. Valvoline, Rotella, Motorcraft, etc. You don't need to change your fuel filter or air filter at 5K (km), that is overkill. The fuel filter should be changed about every 15K (mi), and the air filter should last 30K (mi) at least. Save some of your money. You are doing the truck any better by that extra expense.

Use Diesel Kleen and add it to your tank each time you fill up.

You should be getting better than 12.5 mpg empty in the city. Have you had the injectors looked at?

The "software upgrade" I doubt did anything, as your truck will run fine on it's factory flash. My truck is a 2002 and has never been re-flashed from what left the factory.
