smog pump question?

How do i bypass the smog pump from a 89 f150 4wd with 302? Do i just get a shorter belt and pull all of it out? To my knowledge its just dead weight. The tube from the exhaust has been sealed off. I'm assuming that its dead weight b/c of this. Is there something I'm missing? The reason why I'm Thinking of taking it off is b/c its squeaking (chirping sound) when the motor decelerates. Does anyone know the size of the belt i would need? Is this even a good idea, and no i don't have to worry about emmisions testing.

A new Thermactor will set you back around $30, which isn't much. You won't gain anything by bypassing it and will probably lose 1-2 mpg on the proccess, as i did (i eleminated mine because i couldn't find a new one in my country).

if you no longer have a converter then its just an extra pulley. i cant imagine that you would loose mileage but you do have to have a bit of back pressure.

Ok i checked some things with a stethescope, smog pump is ok, crankshaft, power steering, alternato and compressor are all ok. Could it be the water pump? While it was running i made the tensioner tighten up ( not the smartest thing) butim running out of ideas!!!! Anyone have any suggestions?

It could be the water pump, but check your tensioner and idler with the stethescope as well. Bearing failure on those pulleys is relatively common.

As far as bypassing the smog pump is concerned, here are a couple threads that outline the removal of the thermactor system:

Well, heres the update. I took the belt off and cranked it. Still squealing, so i climbed under it and noticed the starter was loose, tighted it and it fixed the squealing!!!

Yeah... one of my pulleys is dying on me... it sound horribly, i'll have to check them all, it's either that or my engine REALLY is going south.
