question about grounding

i have a 300 inline 6 1986 and was wondering does the battery ground wire have to run down to the frame first and ground then to the tranny bolt or can it run straight to the tranny bolt

just a quick thought but if you run the wire straight to the tranny bolt wont the current still be connected the frame because the tranny is bolted to cross member

another quick thought but wouldn the ground use the first connection to the frame instead of splitting and going to the tranny bolt too

Grounds use whatever and all connections available to them, they are just a pathway back to the negative terminal of the battery. So the more the better. It might still work fine only going to the transmission, but consider that Ford may have had an actual reason for grounding that cable both to the frame and the transmission.

The battery negative cable is supposed to go to one of the starter mounting bolt. 300-6. Not the transmission.

There is an additional frame grounding tang, midway on this cable.

The tranny mount, and engine mounts are rubber insulated, and they are also meant to flex slightly under torque, so it's not a good grounding point etc...

The cab needs a ground cable from the engine to the firewall as well. The cab mount bushings are also rubber insulated.

Thanks for brining this up, I have a question on 86' 302 EFI grounding. I just pulled and rebuilt the motor and trans. The only grounding I saw on the whole setup was a negative battery cable to the engine block and some grounding lugs coming from the wiring harness that bolt to the intake manifold bolts. There may have been something going from the battery to the chassis but I can't remember. Shouldn't there be more than that? Like a strap going from the block to the chassis, or a strap going to the transmission somehow? Sorry to hijack your thread trumsey.

Yes there is a grounding point to the frame, but it's different between a 300 and 302.

The V8's can actually ground through the mounting bolts on the engine mounts.

The 300 cannot do it that way satisfactorly, as they are designed different, naturally.

You can add a cable between the engine block and the frame to satisfy your grounding needs as an option.

Good idea. I think i will just go get some straps and put one from transmission to frame, one from engine to body, and make sure there is a battery to body. Can't hurt to have too many grounding point can it?
