99 E-350 Chime

I've accepted my air bag light being on, been that way for 6 years, could be from a wire running to my seat belt as my handicap modification has my seat on a 6 way Ricon power base, could be pinching a wire. Some years ago I dealt with the chime while I was driving, was momentary, like when the key is in and door is open, or lights are left on, well it's back. The last time I got so mad I stripped the trim from the dash and started unplugging items that appeared to be chimes, none were the offender, as it kept going, I corrected itself after a few days. The other day as I left my house, the irritating noise was going, but I happened to notice my air bag light was off, not sure if it's a coincidence or not. I don't enter the drivers door, I use the wheelchair lift mounted at the side doors, only open the drivers door when I reach in to start it on occasion before entering.

Can't help much with the air bag light but is there a code showing on a scanner? Could be one of the sensors has failed, giving you the MIL.

The chime module is just to the left and under the radio, a square-ish module with (I think) a five-wire connector plugged into it. I had the opposite problem with no warnings when drivers door opens and lights are left on. (I disabled the key-in-igntion feature by snipping the wire from the key switch). My module had failed but even replacing it didn't help until I traced the wires from the drivers door switch back to the module connector, finding I had a short or something else not allowing a signal to the module.

I'd suggest checking the door pin switch which might have failed---since you don't use that door its entirely possible it needs replaced. They're easy to do and cost less than $15 anywhere.

I'd consider it being the door switch, but the interior light is off, comes on with the door is open, but chime is intermittent with the door shut.

Not to belabor the point but there are two separate wires, one leading to the interior light the other possibly triggering the chime module. Otherwise the module itself is defective and/or on its way out OR a wire has been damaged somehow.

Hope its an easy fix whatever it turns out to me--I'm sure that's one annoying darned condition!

Maybe I'll go get another switch, bet it's a dealer item, it was a shuttle before I bought it 8 years ago, so I'm guessing the door saw a lot of action before I bought it.

Actually those are available at almost any parts outlet, my favorite being NAPA. The front door switches are a bit different than side or rear doors because they come with a plastic surround that's easily popped in and out of its mounting hole. They also "self adjust" so after they're installed you simply close the door and their depth is set and you're done----couldn't be easier!

I hope that's all it is---no more than $15 at the absolute most if so. The module is about $45 if memory serves me.

Hope this has been helpful!

When I open the door and manually push in/out a few times on it, it quits, but requires it everytime I start it, yet I never open the door, quite frustrating, if it's the module, I'll yank it, but not sure it's location as I unplugged a box up by the radio years ago when I had this issue and did nothing. So the plastic pulls out, I see you can't get at the nut with the stuff surrounding it?

The front door switches are replaced with the plastic bezel already attached---only side and rear door switches have threaded stems which simply screw into the door shells with a wrench or socket.

The chime module does a few different things including: key still in ignition when drivers door opens, head & running lights still on when driver door opens, seat belt reminder when first started and a few chirps as a prove out of on board self diagnosis which includes the MIL/CEL light and OBD-II system.

There is just one chime module which is indeed located just under and to the left of the radio, attached to a metal strut that forms part of the dash board superstructure. It can be accessed by removing the radio OR the doghouse---look just below the heater/AC outlet in the dash, also left of the radio.

It sounds to me like the module is working as it should apart from it sounding when driving down the road. As far as plastic surrounding a nut you need to get at----have no idea what that means.

Never mind, my first thought was right, the airbag light is on, the chime is off, seems they go hand in hand, what ever the airbag issue is, goes hand in hand with the chime. Could be the seatbelt, I'm not sure. The 6 way power seat base required an extension to be put on the belt, now the airbag light has been on for years, I've messed with the extension and gotten nowhere. A few years ago, I had to replace the buckle, the cable broke, I've owned old vehicles with the nylon belt, even been through junkyards where they've seen the weather and none have ever broken, yet my steel cable did. Replacement of the buckle had no effect to anything, be it airbag, or seatbelt light, the belt light never came on, the airbag light never goes off, except for the occasion when it's replaced with the stupid chime.
How do I replace the door pin if you can't use a ratchet on it due to the plastic, not that I need to now?

The plastic bezel is part of the front door switches----its purchased that way, can't really be replaced with a switch designed for the side/rear doors.

You simply pop it out with a suitable tool, something similar to a clip or upholstery tool used in auto body and/or glass shops. Once its free of the mounting hole unplug it, connect and install a new switch with attached bezel and it all pushes back into place. First time the door is closed the switch is automatically set at its right position or height and you're done.
