I have purchased a 2004 ford Explorer 4x4 which has mounted already to the frame the tow base plate brackets and the tow bar assembly. What is the procedure you need to go through in order to tow this vehicle with four wheels on the ground? I have not been able to locate the owners manual to read the steps needed prior to towing the vehicle?
Check if the drive shaft uncouple kit has been installed. Was a Ford option (dealer installed), Cant flat tow without it unless you drop the rear shaft...
Yeah, what he said, you have to be able to disconnect the drive shaft in order to tow flat, otherwise you will spin the transmission without lubrication.
A 2004 Explorer 4x4 with the electronic shift transfer case CAN be flat towed and yours probably already has the kit installed since it has the tow plates installed if it's a ESOF. Obviously a previous owner towed it! If it is an All Wheel Drive (or 4x2) it cannot.
1L2Z-7H332-AB was the kit offered from Ford to do so on your model. Ford TSB 06-7-1 verifies it. Here is an online source for the TSB .
There should be a small bracket with a light and "NEUTRAL TOW" inscribed on it on the bottom of the dash panel on the drivers side and various decals placed on the vehicle to indicate the kit was installed ..... IF it was all installed by a Ford dealer.
It is referenced in the owners manual on page 182. If you need to view the manual go HERE.
If you want the instruction sheet from the kit just PM me your email address. I'll also put you in contact with the RV flat tow guru if you like.
