Ok so I've been thinking about turning up the injector pump a little on my 6.9, just 1/6 turn max, but I won't be able to get a Pyrometer for about 2 weeks-1 month. Will I be ok for a little while if I drive it nicely or am I going to blow up my truck right away?
Well i've heard it adds a little bit of power and I know it adds a little bit of coal. And someone will get mad at me for this, but where I come from, everybody drives a diesel and smoke is considered "cool". And cops don't care. Cuz my 6.9 with a little black isn't as bad as the idiot with the 30 foot tall cummins a block away with a 250 HP chip in it.
Ya and its a $500 truck so i dont wanna put a $2500 turbo on it. just a little free mod. and i am getting a pyrometer, im just in the middle of nowhere for the next couple weeks so i wont be able to get one till i get home. and i wanted to make sure its safe
If you want to be comletely safe just wait til you get the pyro. It takes just 10min to turn it up so why rush it. And yes on an NA motor egt's will rise very quickly. There is no way to tell if it has already been turned up a flat of so and when you turn it up another on top of that your pistons will get hotter then the sun.
I bought it from a friend of mine's grandpa and he said they hadn't done anything to it. it has 422,000 km on it and still runs like a dream. so it has been well taken care of. Ya i'll maybe wait till i get the pyro. depends how bored i get. do you guys know of any other cheap little mods on these engines?
That's cool, huh? How cool is it to be stuck on the side of the road with a junked truck with burnt pistons? How cool is it to have to buy another vehicle because you wrecked the engine in your current one?
I was riding with a guy with a tuned truck when he melted his down while towing my trailer up a hill. Had to get towed 40 miles to the shop. One month and $7,000 later he was back on the road. He did not look or feel cool at that point.
I'm willing to bet I'm not much older than you, and believe me there are many more important things to worry about than looking cool. Things like keeping that truck running as long as possible, being able to afford to go out with friends instead of fixing your truck, etc.

Why risk your truck over something like this?
I think you missed the part where i said turn it up a little bit. not crank it all the way. and the point of this whole thread is seeing if it is safe to do. I'm not going to do anything that will destroy my engine. I have seen guys melt engines. By not having a pyro or ignoring it and running at 1700 Degrees. I'm not an idiot. Just wanna add a little bit. i'm getting a pyro and will keep it under 1200 at all times. From what i've read. this adjustment is relatively safe up to half a turn on the pump. three times what i'm planning.
And don't worry your old truck will give you plenty of this to try and fix.(don't ask me how i know) I always carry a wrench set a few screw drivers and a vise-grip. There's never been anything a can't fix good enough to get home.

I get what you're saying, but remember that more fuel will equal much higher EGTs, no matter how much you turn it up.
The truck has over 400,000 KMs on it, meaning that engine has seen a lot of use. At this point there's not much that can't go wrong with the truck, and if this is your primary vehicle you are probably best suited to doing what's best for the truck.
I've never seen a "safe" engine mod, as you change the way the engine operates from what it was designed to do.
It's your truck, and I hope you do what makes you happy. I hope I'm wrong and it lasts a long time. Good luck !
I have mine turned up a little, but the max I see for smoke is a light haze, that way i can be more comfortable that it isn't getting too hot. I know i need to add a pyro, but I am confident it isn't so hot when there isn't too much excessive fuel. Besides, I don't want to see excessive black rolling out, I can't afford to waste fuel that way. I need reliability and efficiency. I don't want black smoke. Its cool at the pulls, but not on the street.
