Years back I had to replace the clutch assy on my old 97.Replacing it was easy, and I didnt have to remove the compressor to do it.
You will need to remove the belt, and buy/rent a special puller.
My only problem back then was finding a Clutch assy. Finally wound up buying a complete compressor off ebay, and taking the clutch off of it.The ebay unit was of course used, but if memory serves it was about 50 bucks with shipping.

Order Motorcraft clutch plate and pulley from Rockauto. Less than $100 parts cost.

The clutch and pulley can be replaced without pulling the compressor. You will need a large snap-ring pliers with 90 degree tips to remove the pulley snap ring in addition to basic tools.

Project SHO gave some good information. Also concerning the puller, consult with a local Auto Parts place such as A/Z.They have a loaner tool program, and should have the puller.
Concerning a procedure,I cant remember exactly what I did(this was years ago),but I have found that if you ask "Google" how to remove a Ford A/C clutch assy",you will likely get the procedure.

You don't need a puller unless you're replacing the coil and that usually isn't necessary.

i have not worked on one of the new AC units in last several years.. but on the older units, you start the pulley onto the shaft, make sure its straight, then install the bolt on the front and as you tighten it, it will push the pulley onto the shaft. YOu have to get 3-4 threads into the shaft befor it bottoms out on the pulley and starts to press. If the bolt is too short, i have bought longer bolts at Auto Zone and used them. PUsh it on 1/4 inch, then remove and add 3-4 washer, then push it on another 1/4 inch, etc.. that way you dont bottom out the bolt in the hole. Last push is with the standard factory bolt
