So on the 3rd of May my truck , 2006 f250, died at an intersection while hauling a load of hay. It would not restart. I had it towed to a local shop who primarily does diesels for diagnosis. They have a good reputation locally. I had to fly to Sao Paulo Brazil the next day on the 4th and will be here till at least the 2nd week of June.
I put my FIL in charge of dealing with the shop since I cannot right now. He called me today and said it was the hpop and they want $2100 to fix it. Now either I am way out of touch or that is insane money for this repair. I am now considering waiting till I get home and doing it myself.
What does a HPOP pump cost? I'd guess about $800. Am I way low here? I was fully prepared to throw $1400+ at it but I cannot wrap my head around $2100.
For that kind of money I think I should be able to get a pump, oil cooler and EGR delete. I always do all my own repairs and maintenance on our vehicles, tractors, and farm equipment so I am admittedly out of touch with repair costs.
What are your opinions on the $2100 figure. If that's a good solid number I may consider it. If not I'd be better off, and ultimately happier, doing it myself.
That seems right for the price of the HPOP, now I do believe its pretty labor intensive, so that seems about what they would charge me to get it done...
Same as you I am all for doing the own work on my own truck....
Now I see you have an 06, i guess from reading around here its RARE for a HPOP to go out on 05's and up,,,,its more likely to be the STC fitting...Not saying its your problem by any means I am not a diesel pro...just shedding some light
Yes my opinion on the hpop failing is the same as yours. STC fitting was my thought or failed IPR. This is why I don't let anyone else work on my junk.
I searched HPOP on google first place that came up was $700 for the pump. That's all I needed to know. STC fitting was $60. I think with the money I save doing it myself I'll be way better off. I need to delete the EGR anyway so I think I made my decision right now.
With a part cost of say approximately $800, labor would be $1300. At a rate of say $70 per hour (higher than an independant in my area will charge) that would be a roughly 18 1/2 hour repair. What is the "book" time on this repair? A weekend basically. Now I don't know about some of you but I don't make the kind of money where my weekend is worth $1300. If it is really just the STC fitting the number climbs to closer to $2000 for the weekend. Ouch!
That's actually a pretty fair price for an HPOP swap but I think it's most likely just the STC fitting also. If you can do it yourself then for that money you can buy all the parts to do EGR cooler, oil cooler, HPOP or STC fitting and IPR valve and start completely fresh. It is very labor intensive but not "hard". Plenty of information here to help you accomplish it yourself.
Just an additional FYI--most of the dealerships here want $1400 just to do an STC fitting.
Npccpartsman thanks for the info on the repair cost. I'm at 133k and this is the first major issue I've had. It seems prudent to take care of the other potential failure points while I'm in there and be good for a while. It's definitely an "as long as I'm in here anyway" scenario.
A good friend of mine went down this path about a year ago himself and his feelings were it wasn't hard once you got the hardware off the top of the motor. I'll have some time off when I get back so I'll just roll into the repair at that time.
As the time to go home draws near I'll be ordering some parts. I am sure I'll have more questions then.
Resurrecting this thread as I am finally back home. Pulled the turbo today and started removing the egr cooler. I noticed the hose between the cooler and intake was dripping coolant. I recently felt that the level was dropping so now I know why. I also pulled the egr valve. It wasn't terrible but it is definitely dirty. Any tips on pulling the intake? Seems the plugs on the wiring harness are giving me the most trouble. Haven't broke any yet but it's a real probability. So aside from the stc fitting, egr, and oil cooler is there anything I should address while in there? Thanks.
FYI, book time on replacing the HPOP is 6.5-7.25 hrs. I just did one on an 03 last week. His repair bill was $1900, but that was new pump, new IPR, New ICP sensor, new intake gaskets, new seals / gaskets on everything I had apart. All new coolant too.
Now as for pulling the intake, disconnect the INJ. wiring on the pass. side, and you should be fine. That is all I unhook when I pull them.
Are you doing an EGR delete while you are in there?
Thanks for the advice. All apart now. I steam cleaned the intake manifold and used easy off on the egr valve. Looks new now. About to do the STC fitting and am waiting on the egr delete to show up. My shop has 2 cars inside in various stages of restoration (1 about ready for the rotisserie) so I am forced to work on this out in the direct sunlight. Since I just got back from Sao Paulo where it's winter right now this heat is killing me. Slow going to say the least. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Did the 06's also need the updated dummy plugs and crankcase vent tubes with the teflon washers behind the oring? Might be something to think about while your in there if needed. Perhaps cleaning out the turbo as well..
Yeah dummy plugs replaced already. Turbo will get cleaned before reinstall. Have everything needed on hand. It was definitely the STC fitting. The 2 orings were fragmented and the plastic (teflon?) ring was blown out in one spot. The new fitting is nothing like the old one. Much better design. Screen on the ipr is perfect. Making good time today but was shutdown by a thunderstorm. Egr delete up pipe is on. Hpop is reinstalled so should finish tomorrow if the rain goes away.
Well it's done. Running extremely smooth. Much better than I remember. My only concern is it's taking a really long time to crank. I expected it to take a while initially but how long should it keep this up. Did a shakedown drive and no issues. I deleted the egr but put the valve back in. So far no check engine light. Happy that I didn't spend the extra $2000 unnecessarily.
