Happened to my Continentals. They didn't shred but they had dry rotted and were split around the entire circumference of all four tires. The tread was separating from the sidewalls on all four. Continental would have covered them under warranty but it meant getting more of them and they were horrible tires on anything but dry asphalt.
Commonly called "tread separation" and not an uncommon failure mode in tires. Result of the tread layers separating from the internal carcass or belts.
Far and away most commonly caused by underinflation, but sometimes due to tire design or manufacturing issues.
Mine absolutely was not caused by under inflation. I check my pressures every time I get fuel and they stay at 65-70 psi. Mine, like so many others, were crap from the outset.
Mine didn't dry rot, nor was it under inflated. The tread just separated from the rest of the tire. Right now, Continental has the tire and are doing their analysis of it.
On my moms old BMW it came with Continentals and two of them shredded, then the guy I bought my f250 from replaced it with a 2009 with factory Continentals and his have dry rotted and one has blown
When I bought my truck it had two Cont. on the front and some junk, bald, rotten tires on the rear. I dont know what brand they were. The cont.s were in good shape so I only bought two new tires for the rear. A week after buying the truck i had a blow out at 70mph on the front left tire. Like yall said, it flung the tread off and I ended up in the ditch on the opposite side of the road. To say I was Pi$$ed is an understatement. I now roll on BF Goodriches like what my spare was.
