I picked up a 6 blade fan from a 312 y-block. My 64 has the 4 blade fan.
Will the 6 blade fan keep my engine cooler? I do not have a shroud on my truck. I like it that way. But if I want to keep it cooler in stop and go traffic, I know I need one. But first.. If the 6 blade fan is better, than I will have a shroud made for that fan.
Opinions are needed here. Thanks in advance.
Def not. Stay with the 4 blade. I am an automotive machinists-engine builder by trade. The 4 blade Ford fan is what I recommend on all my race engines. Bigger is not better in this case. Get a shroud and space the fan about 11/2 -2 in away for optimum cooling.

I am curious about the reason for 4 over 6 blades? Too much power loss with 6? I do know the 6 blade fan is pretty heavy. I think the 6 which is on hand came from a COE with Y.
I guess I should also add that if you're going to only drive around empty and not load up your truck much (F-100?), you probably don't really need more airflow.
You could even get away with an electric.
OTOH, if you load up you truck like I might load up mine, (16,000 GVW ) with air conditioning and an automatic trans cooler etc......... you might need more airflow!
Air flow, only in stop and go traffic. It gets pretty hot here in June, July and August. I know I need a shroud and I'll probably put one on sooner than later. I do not want to put on an electric fan.

That's where it came from. a 312 with original intake and Holley 4 barrel. I snagged all I could from this engine. I thought like most people would think, more blades more flow. Then I figured I would ask others what their thoughts were.
HT32BSX115 My fan blades are like this one, however the center is like all original fans are. And it is heavy just like 46yblock says.

Yeah.
Mine is designed to go on a clutch. I am going to have a"high-mount" fan. driven from one of the belts. I will chose the pulley so it doesn't turn all that fast compared to the crankshaft.
I plan to run a 190 degree t-stat. The clutch will probably be running at 30% or so until I load it up and put more heat on the clutch.

Let me know how that turns out. Always curious about better air flow.
