I just installed the 08 tailights in my 99 SD but both sides have moisture in the backup lens. The bulbs go through a blue vinyl gasket/washer which evidently isn't enough.
Have any of you had this problem? Is there supposed to be a gasket around the entire light assembly? There was none on my original 99 and that never leaked.
How is the water getting in? Is there a hair line crack some place? Holes in back? I haven't had taillights pulled on my 08 yet but on other years there was a vent hole so that condensation would evaporate out. Do they fit well in body is there someplace where water sets on top of light?
I've seen several guys on this forum who have made this upgrade to the older SD's, which is what motivated me to upgrade mine. Outside of the location change of the BU light, they are basically the same. The wiring needs to be changed on new sockets, an easy job, but no change in the mounting surfaces of the lens. I believe in my case, I was too much in a hurry and put the socket in the wrong position preventing the lens from seating properly. I just redid it and carefully made sure it had a tight fit all around. Hopefully I fixed it. We are not supposed to get rain for a few days, but maybe I'll wash it and report back soon.
Yeah I have been wanting to add this upgrade to my truck but my only problem is that my strobe lights have limited space and dont think they would work with the new position. I guess I need to get a newer light to find out.

Hi Scott,
You are the one who introduced me to this upgrade. The 08 lens has an extra unused red lens on the bottom, there is a 3/4" boss with a 1/4" hole in the center that could be enlarged. It is covered with a light bluecircular piece of tape. Maybe you could put your strobe here (it's shown on the left here, but it is actually on the bottom. I thought the pix was rotated, but it is sideways). Hope you can modify it to work for you.
Good luck,
Wayne
Yeah Wayne I guess it could be used for the strobes. Heck I have to install some strobes in a buddy of mine from church's F350 and could just swap tail lights, since mine are drilled and installed. Hmmm now to find some 08 lights.

Hi Scott, I emailed you privately but haven't heard back from you. Just in case I messed up your email address I wanted you to know I have an extra set of 08 lenses.
Also just to let everyone know, my original problem with water leaking into the lens was simply because I didn't have the bulb sockets inserted properly. All is fine now and they look great.
PS. The only modification required is electrical: changing the BU light socket.
Yes sir got the email Wayne! The truck looks great and paint is super on the tailgate. I will take those lights too, just give me a few to get back in town. Now I just need to find a newer tailgate like you have hehe.
I have the same issue on my '07 Expedition. For some reason, it seems to almost always be the drivers light too. I've seen a few other Expeditions in parking lots and their drivers light had condensation in it, more often than not.
I am going to tackle this issue this summer....I'm thinking about heating up the assembly in the oven to open it up and reseal it with good silicone. I did the same procedure to a different vehicle with great success.
