4 Speed Transmission
Hello all, I just picked up an 89 f150 4.9 4x4 from a farmer here in town, its got a 4 speed transmission with a real low granny 1st instead of the 5 speed I expected. Would this most likely be a t-18? I was expecting an m5od, if it is a t-18 is that a good thing? I've usually done the diesel thing so this is kinda new ground to me. Thanks

Yup that's the good old T18.
Depending what you'll be doing with the truck, that tranny will work work and work for ever!
A M5OD won't last very long working hard, but it is nice for highway driving.
highway or work, I'd keep the T18 but thats up to you.

It could be a Borg/Warner T-18, a T-19, or an NP-435. All are awesome. If the gearbox has a PTO cover on the driver's side, it is a Borg/Warner box. If it has a synchronized 1st gear, it's a T-19. If 1st gear is un-synchronized, it is a t-18. If it has an aluminum top cover and a PTO cover on the passenger side, it is an NP-435, built by New Process (now New Venture). All are excellent boxes with unsurpassed reliability and brutal strength.
