Tansmission Recommendations

I currently have a 1968 F100 with a 351W and what I believe is a T18 granny 4 speed transmission and a 78 rear end with 3:50 gears . I am seriously considering swapping in a 5 speed transmission. Would anyone have any recommendations on a good transmission to go with. Im looking for a fairly easy swap. Thank you in advance.

Any modern 5 speed is most likely going to need a hydraulic clutch set up. Any sbf modern transmissions will have bell housing as part of tranny. Couple of choices would be ZF S5-42, MR5OD, and Tremec TKO

2X Brian. And there has been quite a few guys on here who have added in the hydraulic clutch. Usually when they are swapping in a diesel. You can investigate their threads looking for how they mounted the hydraulic clutch master cylinder.

Transmission swap

3X on the more modern transmissions, as far as the hydraulic clutch set up, the Ford trucks from 97 on have that. You should not have any trouble finding one in a salvage yard.

Sure.. a short-shaft Tremec TKO-500 from Modern Driveline.. stock bell, stock clutch linkage.. it's a bolt-on.

Nope. The shifter is shown at the second to the rear-most position. A candy cane shifter and it cleared the bench just fine. I have since switched to 70 Mach 1 buckets and a 96 XLT center console.

Not to hijack, but I'd like to see pics of the seats and console Hio. I don't remember seeing any on your rig.

I wouldn't use an M5R2 behind a 351 in a full size truck. The F250 and F350 with the 4.9 and 5.8 got the much stronger ZF S5-42 from 89-96/97, it has an internal slave cylinder like the M5R2. You can get everything you need from a junkyard truck, and the install isn't very hard. In my "build thread- with a twist" I show a bit more detail on how to install a hydro clutch in these old trucks.

The boot and bezel are also 70 Mach 1 when equipped with a Hurst shifter. It is "period correct"..... subtle mods was the goal for the LBB.

My choice too but then my pickups are used for work and not just a car with a open bed. But one thing I have never seen (not saying they didn't make one) is a 300 with a ZF. The ZF came in the heavier duty F250 and F350 and I didn't think you could get a 300 in those models. Also the 91 and earlier ZF have a speedometer provision and the 92 and later didn't, according to my observation of the ones I have owned.
