Motor id
I know, another "what motor do I have" thread. Im sorry.
I have been through the search over and over, and I know I can drop the starter and get block id. I wish gramps was around, he would know just by looking.
But, if im not mistaken, isnt there something about these motors that give them away? Could be wrong, but dont have a whole lot of time right now(t-ball season started).
the truck is an 82 f100 either converted to 4x4 or body swapped to an 79 f150.
Thanx

that means it is either a 351M or a 400.
there REALLY is no way to tell from looking at the outside.
You can tell what was installed on the assy line by looking at the vin.
I don't know which digit it is . but the is one that tells what engine it came with.

Yeah, the vin wont help on this one. The truck is a hodge podge thrown together, but I got it cheap cuz I went with my gut on the motor.
My new question is, could it be a 351C? Is there something else to look for?
I will end up pulling the driveline out of the truck and scrapping it.
So, at the worst, I have a 351M, very nice C6 4x4, a 9in rear end, and a Dana 40(?) front end.... not bad for 500.00 that my boss was just gonna scrap.

Unlikely it's a C:
Note how low the deck is on the C--similar to the 351w in deck height:

Note the additional height, and the "wall" behind the thermostat/distributor area on the 400/351m:
