im thinking about buyin this 360 thats in my local junky just for a rebuild. but i wanna know what kind of cubes are possible from a 360. can i turn it into a 428 or 427? if so i'd buy that motor in a second. i hear that the motors cant be over bored that much, is sleeving an option? basically im looking to make massive amounts of power and tourqe with huge amounts of cubes. im currently in the middle of my 400 project, but these fe's are getting hard to find, so i dont wanna miss out on this one.
I don't know but it you might be able to put the 428 crank in a 360 or get an aftermarket crank. I wouldn't want it bored any more than .060. YOu should get just enough to clean up the walls.
hmmm, i like those numbers. i love 400+ ci motors. i think that 416 would be a nice number of cubes. the thing i love about fe motors are those powerbyford valve covers . what should i look for in a junk yard motor? im going to rebuild it, so i dont think its neccecary to be running, but im not sure. and how much, is a 360 worth? 500 bucks? less?
i do plan on buying an edelbrock intake, as aluminum is lighter than cast iron. and these mostors allready weigh enough. why under 150k? i was under the assumption that as long as a total rebuild was in mind milage doesnt matter. i do plan on going with new pistons and such as well.
I got one for $35 at my local junkyard. They're a dime a dozen.
If you really like cubes you could get a SCAT 4.25" stroker crank and have 445 cubes with a .030" overbore.
I'd suggest finding one still in a pickup truck, preferably with D2TE-AA or newer heads, since they'll have hardened unleaded friendly exhaust valve seats.
360's and 390's share the same block and heads, the only difference is the crank, rods, and in some cases pistons. They're ok with overbores up to about .060", after that you'll want to have 'em checked for wall thickness. .080" is about the max I'd take one.
I got a 390 shortblock from my local junkyard for 150.00. If you are going to buy heads and intake from an aftermarket source why pay extra for a longblock. The only parts that are left over from the 390 shortblock are the crank, rods and of course the block. Everything else is new. Oh yeah, the timing cover and damper were reused also.
Those heads came 1972 and later. Actually, with a rag and a flashlight, it's not that hard to find the head casting number. It's right between the two middle spark plugs, on a flat spot looking right up at you.
so for the sake of example, if i saw a 75 f350 that has an fe, its probably either a 360 or 390 with those heads?
I guarantee it!
I myself would want a motor is less then 150,000 miles would beless cylinder wall wear, lifter bore wear, and less chance for cracks and other fatigues in a engine. But for the most part it doesn't matterhow many miles it has. I (me, myself) would want under 150,000 but it doesn't mean you have to.

well that makes sence. i never thought of it that way. now all i need to find is a motor to work on. im sure a local junky has a couple of them. as ive seen one recently. as to how much they want, probably top dollar just because i want it. hopefully i can get the motor mount towers with it. unless i can change the towers from a 351m. but i doubt it.
