for those people running these on their 300s what size metering rod is best for this carb when paired with a Offy DP? The carb I got was second hand and i've tried two different sizes and they're both fouling my plugs so I would appreciate any help.
There is probably not one size that fits all I6 300s. Too many variables in builds, operating conditions, etc. I think Edelbrock has a jet and metering rod kit available to tune the carb to the engine.
The kit costs $50 and is worth every penny. You need to ck the float level, then the spring and metering rod assembly to be sure they are seated properly.
Also, if that carb is used, you need to pull the primary jets out and ck what size they are. IIRC they come with .086 jets. Once the floats and m.rods/springs are checked, you should drop down in jet size if the problem persists.
If that carb is still dumping fuel, you prob. need to rebuild it. You really do need to get the jet kit.
I rebuilt the thing before putting it together and set the floats ect according to edelbrocks website, but I'll check and see if one of the floats are full of fluid.
Nope the floats don't appear to be stuck and aren't full of gas, The size I have in it now as far as the rods go is .060x .057 according to the receipt, I've been to the carb factory ounce and swapped out the original rods so the engine is just loading up at idle and puking ounce you go to take off ounce I start pushing the gears or reach cruising speed it is perfect and has plenty of power.
The shop doesn't open till monday but being as Jegs list theirs as being equipped with .065x052 I am going to see if they have anything around that mark being as mine appear to be a bit smaller.
Do you have heat going to the bottom of the intake? That solves a lot of low-speed bog issues.
Edlebrock carbs 500-600 cfm are usually no worries out of the box on an otherwise stock six. If you're fouling plugs I've got to think there's something wrong beyond the metering rods. Is there gas pouring out of the carb when it's at idle?
No gas is pouring out of the carb the bowls aren't overflowing this carb isn't out of the "box" it is off another 6 I bought that was never run and who knows what it was on before that. Like I said I measured the metering rods they're to small I am going to swap them out if that doesn't work i'll change the jets. I got my pos toyota to run so I am not completely screwed so I can tinker with it without relying on it to get me to work and back. As far as heat goes its sitting on the stock manifold with steel touching so it gets plenty hot and the fact that it fouled the plugs in less then 30 minutes makes me think I need to start swapping out parts.
Also my trucks a 72 with no muffler/cat and it only spews raw liquid gas after its been idleing and had a chance to load up.
800 isn't low my tac reads accurate, I haven't messed with the sun tach since I put it in and it reads right I checked it when installing it. Its idling rich my pipe is black my plugs are black and I can see carbon flying out the thing when it loads up the lady at the carb shop e mailed me today said a set of stock sized jets are $8 so when I take the metering rods in to exchange them for another size free of charge I'll buy a set. That way I can swap the jets out for ones I know are the stock size if the rods indeed don't do it.
That should give you a good starting point. Go through that and go to the tuning section and they have a graph of some of the tuning stages to get it dialed in. On my truck in my signature. Im running at reference point 6 on the graph and 2 stages lean on the secondary jet.
It really sound to me like if it is loading up on idle that the choke is stuck. The 1404 has the manual choke on it I believe. That would be a good starting point. In that manual it tells you all the combinations and what the stock setup was with the metering rods and jets. The metering rods and jets go together. Certain ones won't work with certain rods and jets so if you started mixing them up it could be that. The rod may be to small and letting fuel through and flood the idling circuit. These carbs are basically out of the box ready to run. I put mine on tuned the mixtures screws a bit and drove. Was a little rich. Start with the mixture screws out 2 1/2 turns and go from there. That manual will be a big help. Read through it and it was some good troubleshooting tips.
Also, I see you say that the rods you have now are 60x57's. If you look at the reference chart the only only one with that rod is 24. Which is a .086 jet and 60x57 rods. That is super rich in the cruise and lean on the power mode. Could be part of the problem!
The choke is hooked to a cable that you manually pull to close its open but yes its running like the choke is on 24/7 although theres no way that is the case.
That and those rods are ones I swapped into it, I took the ones out it had when I first fired it up went to the carburetor factory and asked for some a few sizes leaner which they sold me for $12. The lady that runs it told me if they didn't work to come back and she'll swap them for leaner ones and as of this morning said they sell the stock metering jets for $8 so tomorrow I am taking the rods back to swap for stock ones and probably the metering jets as well just to check and see if they're the correct size. Believe it or not it was barely running at all when I first put it on and even after swapping to the leaner ones the (.060x.057) it got better, I don't really care if it runs a tad rich as long as it doesn't foul my plugs and get me hit lol its a work truck not a hot rod but the engine it came off has no known history so I have no idea what engine it was originally setup to run on.
Well the only rods she had close to stock were .065x.055 however we checked my metering jets and they're .095..... i ordered s ome jets from edelbrocks website lol
