Got a 77 f150 4x4, when I lock her in and activate the 4 wheel drive I can get up to about 10 or 15mph and then I start to get some mad front end wheel hop. What all could possibly cause that?
Its on dry ground not so much pavement, going down my drive then down the road, drive being dirt and such does it on both. Yes same size tires all same manufacturer and same year tire. no locker. Im going to jack it up and find out what my ratio is tomarrow. I finally got a build sheet for it so I would think it would be its stock 3.50. P.O never said anything about changing the axles, but who knows. Anything else possibly cause it besides different ratios, just incase? Thanks guys for all the help.
Just for s**ts n giggle unlock the hubs but leave it in 4x and see what happens, if it were gear ratios I don't think it would matter how fast you are going it would bind and hop. See if you have any vibration or hear any grinding, could it be a u-joint is ceased?
Let us know what you come up with, if you don't find anything by unlocking the hubs then I would lean towards gears. Good luck!
Yea middle name has a good point. Try to eliminate some of the variables. Unlocking the hubs is a good idea.
My very first thought was trackbar bushing. What kind of shape is it in? While your at it look at all your bushings to check for excessive play. You would probably get really bad hop in 2wd or 4wd if the bushings were shot but it's still something to cosider.
Does your build sheet say anything about a front limited slip or "trak lock". My 79 has front and limited slips and the rear one had a broken case which caused really irradic and unpredictable noises and jerking in the rear end til I took it apart and discovered what was going on.
More than likely someone swapped the rear gears for some 2.75's or 3.00's out of a JY truck and either didn't realize it or didn't care at the time and that's causing the binding/hopping.
