Well, if i can get gears made somewhat reasonable, i'm trying to design a PTO winch using this box. Failing that, its gonna be scrap and i'll get more for the brass gear separate than if i leave it in the box...

Well, after actually looking under the truck, there really isn't a way to run a shaft forward.

I was looking forward to doing this. Exhaust is going to make it hard to run a shaft backwards... guess i'm gonna scrap the worm gear unit. maybe i can find a cheap hydraulic pump somewhere and put a wet kit on my truck and run a hydraulic winch.

We had a 68' F-500 4x4 that had a pto driven front winch and there was a hole thru the front crossmember so the shaft could pass thru it to the front bumper. I wouldn't run it that way but it did work and didnt crack or anything. Don't know how well that would work on your truck it's just a brain dropping i had. Also manure spreaders often have worm gear boxes.

Well.....another twist today....

The shaft in the worm gearbox This mush have some torque...

New problem: I need new gears

The only ID i found on the box was:

Baughman Mfg Co
Jerseyville Ill

H 501

So far i cant find a place to get gears or any info on the specs for the box. Anyone feel like helping me out?

Those teeth needed a dentist a long time ago. looks like you need a whole new gear. Maybe you can find one of the same size at an industrial supply company.

As i was looking at it, i think its the TTB that bites me. I'm not cutting any holes in the crossmember cause it hold my front axle on...

If i had a solid front axle i could go between the crossmember and the axle, but theres just no room with the way it is now, and in the fall i'm dropping my truck back to stock height, and i'll really have no room...

That gear is about 6.75" diameter and 1.5" wide, i think i'd have a tough time finding one locally.

This is the second time i've seen a worm gear like that. The other time was the winch that raised our bi-fold door. It would raise up then drop a few inches, then raise more....scary stuff. The teeth on that gear looked about the same and the was a section that had no teeth. It was brass too...

Anyone else have an idea that i could use this box for that would make it work fixing?
