I was stripping an old lime spreader today and found a PTO gear box, but it's unlike any i've seen before.
The top and single outputs turn all the time. There is no clutch on them.
The lever controls the lower shaft. To the right (as it is now) it is direct drive with the single output. Middle is free-wheeling (no power) and left is under-driven (dont know the ratio, i think its about 3:1 or 4:1).
There are two rivets that would hold a nameplate on, but the tag itself is missing.
Is this something i should try and talk my boss out of? Or should we just scrap it?
What brand of spreader did it come off of? Looks like it might be a handy little box to hang behind an 86 Ford F250 6.9L IDI 4x4 3.55 gears T-19 w/ a new pto unit on it it sould run anything you could think of I'd take it home you could always toss it anytime but you only get one chance too bring it home
did it power the spreader beaters and the web in the box? i would probably hang on to it just because thats what i do..lol never know when you could find a use for it
There are several (very) old farm trucks, but they're all Chevys. This is a 6100 GMC (big bore V6!) with a Baughman spreader on it.
The box was used as a PTO splitter only, it was bolted to the side of the hopper with a spacer, not a transmission.
If i put it on my truck i could have a problem with having 2 live shafts all the time and only being able to control one of them. There's also a worm gearbox and Joe said i should make a PTO winch. I like the idea, but i looked everywhere and cant find an inexpensive F/N/R gearbox to make it work...
You may be able to find a F/N/R box on a silage chopper i know our 170 new holland had one but that would need the pto unit to be on the t-19 and a shaft running to the gearbox
Can anyone tell me what direction the PTO gear in a T-19 trans turns (right side is the one i need i think) and if the gear is at the front or rear of the opening? Please and thank you.
Got some more pics of my new toys...
I counted the worm drive at something like 44:1 ratio and low gear on the PTO was about 2.75:1, high was 1:1.
As far as i know they dont have anything planned for that V6.... You wanna buy it? I know theyd sell it. The truck as a whole is junk...

Buaghman made truck mounted spreaders for salt, ash, fertilizer, they also made refuse trailers and bodys. From what i found they were in business from the 1940's thru the 70's. I hate to be the johnny thunder cloud that rains on your parade but finding gears my be harder and more pricey then finding a new box. What are you looking to do with that box?
